What We Do
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.
New Home Construction
Habitat homes are affordable to families with low incomes, because the houses are modest, built largely by volunteers and the families themselves, and are sold at no-profit with a no-interest mortgage.
Each of our partner families (homeowners):
- Makes a down payment
- Makes monthly mortgage payments
- Invests hundreds of hours of their own labor – sweat equity – into building their house and the houses of others.
- Homeowners are selected based on their need for housing, their ability to repay a mortgage and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat.
Habitat for Humanity is about helping families that go to work every day to pay their bills and raise their children, but are priced out of the costly real estate market.
The finances of a working family are improved by gaining equity in home ownership. Home ownership provides some measure of control over a basic element of life: shelter. Habitat brings stability, pride and self worth to hard working families through home ownership.
This control and sense of investment in the community are crucial to breaking the attitude and cycle of poverty.
Habitat is a hand up, not a hand out.
Critical Home Repairs and Neighborhood Revitalization
Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity does so much more than new construction! True to our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live; in addition to building homes, we build communities through Neighborhood Revitalization.
Neighborhood Revitalization is a core value of Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity. SLVHFH partners with select neighborhoods to build the community they dream of living in by responding to community needs with an expanded array of products, services and partnerships. Our mission with Neighborhood Revitalization is to empower residents to revive their neighborhoods and enhance their quality of life.
Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a retail outlet where quality used and surplus building materials are donated by individuals, businesses, contractors, and other organizations who wish to show their support for Habitat. Products are then sold at below retail prices. Proceeds from ReStore help fund the Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity mission of eliminating poverty housing within our community. By donating materials to the ReStore you not only help assist in the building of a Habitat home but also reduce the amount of materials sent to the local landfill. ReStores keep over 950 tons of materials out of the landfill each year.
A Habitat for Humanity affiliate program, the mission of the ReStore is to:
- Provide additional funding to support the affiliate’s house-building goals.
- Expand opportunities to serve a broader base of the low income community by providing low income materials.
- Divert Construction and household materials from the landfills & protect the environment.
